Kids grow and eat the vegetables they grow. Each classroom has a designated garden bed and and access to a custom greenhouse. It's a great space to learn about science and taking care of our environment.
Monarch teachers and students have access to a thoughtfully designed outdoor classroom including a green house and an orchard of various fruit trees! And we're expanding all the time!
The garden features a native garden highlighting California native plants and their traditional Chumash uses. There is also a pollinator garden designed to teach our students about the Monarch Butterfly Migration and other pollinators.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Get your hands dirty! There are lots of ways to get involved from helping us with garden maintenance or taking your child's class out to our garden! Our outdoor classroom is run completely by parent volunteers so we always need garden volunteers to keep our garden thriving. Please email monarchgrovePTA@gmail.com to get involved in the garden.
As part of our enrichment programs, our school participates in the Trex Plastic Recycling Challenge. Students and families can recycle their clean, squishy plastic by dropping it off in our collection bins. We collect and weigh it each week and send it into the competition. Our school competes against other schools our size on the west coast. Last year we won a new bench for the garden and this year we hope to win again!
This program provides a great opportunity to teach our kids about the value of recycling and keeping pollution out of our landfills and oceans!

DownloadThe Monarch Grove Children’s Garden was created in 2005 by a group of parents who revamped an existing California native garden and constructed raised beds for vegetables and herbs on an unused portion of the school grounds. Over the past years, fruit trees have been planted, a garden shed purchased and a larger worm bin constructed, creating an outdoor classroom. Students are taught about composting using their lunch leftovers to feed the worm compost bin. The compost is used to keep our garden growing strong!
The Garden is supported financially by the PTA and generous donations from the community. The children have raised funds through plant sales and farmer’s markets. We currently maintain the garden through supportive parents whom organize workdays and help facilitate students and teachers utilizing the Garden. We love our MG garden!
